Oral Histories
in Executive Director´s Book
Lucent
Books recently published Life in a Nazi Concentration Camp,
a supplemental textbook written by our Executive Director, Anne
Grenn Saldinger. Targeted for middle and high school students, the
book helps students understand what life was like for those who
struggled to survive in Nazi concentration camps.
The textbook
uses a wide variety of primary quotations including information
gleaned from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project´s
recorded testimonies. It also provides a powerful portrayal of historical
circumstances, brought to life by a focus on descriptions of daily
routines, unbearable conditions, and personal struggles and triumphs.
The book brings this history to life for thousands of students in
schools across the country.
Oral Histories
in Film Giving Voice
The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project recently produced
the short documentary film Giving Voice.
As part of the exhibition Silent Voices Speak, the film
uses oral history excerpts from four of the individuals whose photos
are portrayed in Barbara Shilo´s collage Survivors:
Then and Now.
By connecting
the artwork to the spoken experiences of these survivors, we are
contributing to the exhibit´s aim of symbolically giving voice,
as well as furthering public knowledge of the importance of giving
personal Holocaust testimony. We wish to thank the four survivors
whose video testimonies we used, and all the other survivors who
have given their oral histories for the purpose of educating future
generations.
