| This list is far from
complete. It is estimated that the Nazis established 15,000 camps
in the occupied countries. This list contains the names of dozens
of concentration camps, extermination camps, and labor camp -- as
well as hundreds of subcamps -- categorized by country. Please refer
to the legend below in order to identify the different types of
camps.
The following list was created from information from the Jewish
Virtual Library (www.us-israel.org/jsource/Holocaust/cclists.html),
which cites two books – Le livre des Camps by Ludo Van Eck
and Atlas Of The Holocaust by Martin Gilbert – and from History
of the Holocaust: A Handbook and Dictionary by A & H Edelheit,
1994.
Legend:
* A star next to a camp name indicates an extermination/death
camp.
** Two stars next to a camp name indicate a transit/holding camp.
- Camps without any identification are categorized as concentration
camps or labor camps.
- Subcamps and external kommandos (work units) are listed beneath
the camp names, when appropriate.
- Only camps with known subcamps are identified as having such.
